One of the little known places in Nairobi is the Central YMCA.
Popular with travelers not quite on a shoestring budget, it is well equipped, with a choice of dorms and single/double rooms, and isn’t marked differently from a modest hotel.
Situated in a beautiful garden, one can enjoy the best garden view of Nairobi from the restaurant terrace. There’s well-priced if average food, and only soft drinks, fruit cocktails are available. A guarded parking lot is offered and the clincher is the excellent facilities! Swimming pool, tennis courts, aerobics studio, and massage services.
It is situated within half a kilometer from the Maasai market (held every Tuesday), cyber cafes, and the matatu station. And no, you don’t have to be Christian or male.
A little background on the place:
"The Vision is to establish a vibrant and sustainable recreational centre for intellectual, physical and spiritual well being of youth and the community.
The Nairobi central YMCA was established in 1975 to serve the community and the youth in providing programs that are geared towards tree dimensional development of the whole person."
It is open 24hr.; no alcohol allowed.
B&B, dorm beds - starting at Ksh 640.(~ $11)
A luggage facility is also available.
When coming from the airport there is a regular bus service to central Nairobi, with the stop next to the Hilton hotel.
Taxi to downtown Nairobi is around Ksh1000 (~ $16-$20)
